Points Transfer
Transfer points to airline & hotel partners
Transferring is where reward points punch above their weight — especially for business and first-class redemptions. Here's the playbook.
What is a points transfer?
Instead of redeeming bank points directly, you move them into an airline's or hotel's own loyalty program (e.g. Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore KrisFlyer). There, points are called “miles” or “points” and can unlock award flights and hotel nights often worth far more than a cashback redemption.
Transfer partners & ratios
Ratios change and depend on the specific card. Always confirm on your bank's transfer portal before moving points.
| From (bank) | To (partner) | Typical ratio | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amex MR | Marriott Bonvoy | 1 : 1 | Hotel |
| Amex MR | Singapore KrisFlyer | 2 : 1 | Airline |
| HDFC | Multiple (via SmartBuy) | Varies | Airline/Hotel |
| Axis EDGE | Marriott / Accor / airlines | Varies | Airline/Hotel |
| ICICI | Select airline partners | Varies | Airline |

Step-by-step: how to transfer
- Link your airline/hotel loyalty account inside your bank's rewards portal.
- Check the current ratio and any active transfer bonus.
- Confirm award availability before transferring — transfers are one-way and can't be reversed.
- Transfer only what you need for the specific redemption.
- Book the award and enjoy.
When transferring is not worth it
- You'd only redeem for economy short-haul (portal cash rate is often as good).
- The ratio is worse than 2:1 with no bonus.
- You're transferring speculatively without a booking in mind.
Golden rule
Never transfer points speculatively. Points in the bank are flexible; once moved to a partner, they're locked to that program.
